What is prorated billing?

Understanding unused time and remaining time on your invoice

Written by Lauren Ford

Air subscriptions are prorated to account for qualifying mid-cycle changes to your plan. Prorated billing means you're charged only for the portion of your billing cycle affected by the change. Depending on the type of change, the prorated amount may be collected during eligible upgrade checkout or appear as an adjustment on an invoice. These changes can include:

  • Adding or removing users (legacy plans, where user-based changes apply)

  • Upgrading or downgrading your plan

  • Other qualifying subscription adjustments handled with Air’s help

Prorated billing describes how qualifying mid-cycle subscription changes are charged, but it does not mean every plan or billing change can be completed in workspace settings.

You'll only be charged for the time the feature was active, not a full billing cycle.

🧾 Subscriptions are billed in advance (monthly or annually), and mid-cycle changes may result in prorated charges or credits that appear during checkout or on an invoice, depending on your subscription state and timing. For eligible self-serve upgrades, checkout shows a preview invoice with the prorated amount due for the change, while Current Plan and future invoices show the recurring renewal amount separately.

Your invoice may include:

  • Standard Charge – Your monthly or annual subscription

  • Remaining Time – A prorated charge for a qualifying subscription change during your billing cycle

  • Unused Time – A prorated credit for a qualifying subscription change during your billing cycle
